The goal of clearing this area has been discussed several times at Ward 5 ResiStat meetings. The work starts tomorrow. ************************ The City has just received confirmation from the MBTA that they will begin clearing the right-of-way between Cedar Street and Lowell Street tomorrow (Saturday) at 8:00 am. This will involve the removal of all trees and vegetation in the center of the ROW and low vegetation along the outside edges of the ROW. Trees screening abutting residences will be kept in place, with the exception of the area abutting the MaxPak site where all vegetation will be removed. The work will continue on weekends until complete. The area has been baited for rodents. _______________________________________________ Ward5resistat mailing list Ward5resistat at lists.somerville.ma.us http://lists.somerville.ma.us/mailman/listinfo/ward5resistat -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I tracked down some answers and wanted to send them along. CONTACT PERSON: Steve Azar, one of the City's senior planners, is the contact person for the project. He can be reached at 617-625-6600 x2561 or sazar at somervillema.gov. WHAT THE PROJECT IS: This is both the start of the process to clear the building at the MaxPak site and the start of clearing the future community path right of way. One of the construction conditions developed by the City and the community calls for the site to be accessed via the current rail right of way in order to better handle traffic flow. The developers are responsible for removing the ties and rails. Also, one of the most pressing reasons for doing the work was to address concerns raised by residents and the Board of Aldermen about the significant overgrowth and public safety. WHERE THE WORK IS BEING DONE: It is along the closed rail spur that starts from where the current Community Path ends. It is the unused right-of-way between Cedar and Lowell Streets. ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION: Demolition of the site will require environmental remediation as well. DEMOLITION TIMEILNE: We do not have a date for the start of demolition of the building. WHEN WILL WORK BE DONE: The work will continue during the weekends until it is complete. At this point, we do not have a timeline for the completion. We will send more updates as they are available. Stephanie, The developer is finalizing their contract with the demolition contractor. The removal of the rail ties is included in the Scope of Work currently under review. Work is anticipated to start early November. The removal of the rail ties is expected to be one of the first items to be completed. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Our theme this year is "Somerville: City of Seven (Or More) Hills". We'll meet at 10 am at Seven Hills Park (behind the Holland Street T entrance in Davis Square), leaving promptly at 10:15. Our ride will be approximately 11 miles, and visit each of Somerville's hills, both those that still exist and those that have been removed. Riders should wear helmets and be prepared for hill climbs and descents. We will make brief stops at the tops of most hills so that riders stay together as a group, but we won't have extended history lectures or speeches. The Somerville Police will escort the ride on bicycles, and Redbones will provide refreshments at the halfway point. For more info (and a list of hills), visit http://somervillebikes.org/events.html . A route map is at http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/312795 , and a cue sheet at http://www.bikely.com/cuesheet/route/312795 . If it rains, we'll try again the next day, same time and location. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
